More Reasons Why…I Love My Job

Something good happens just about every day (bad too, but I like seeing that glass half full). Last week, I had several reminders of my exceptionally good fortune – personally and professionally (in my role, that’s a hard line to locate).

On Tuesday

Special Sauce: The annual Parents Appreciation Breakfast included the “retirement”  of PA President Barb Clayton and several other intrepid board members. Listening to Barb thank her team (and many others), I marvelled at these people who happily invest time and passion in St. Luke’s. This PA team was driven, savvy, and successful in their determination to engage parents and grow connections. As I told this group, parents are the “special sauce” at St. Luke’s. Maybe other schools have equally warm, kind, generous, enthusiastic, and talented parents…but I doubt it.

On Thursday

Out of the Mouths of Seniors: Graham Mink, delivered his Meditation about the concept of “home” and said this: “St. Luke’s is a form of home to us all…After we leave, we will come back to visit not only each other, but also the amazing teachers who have taught us lessons in and out of the classroom and have become friends and family…How awesome to think about how we have grown and changed, and how blessed we are to call this place home.“

On Friday

Living the Mission: Still warm from Graham’s words, I received a “keep forever” email from Duncan Edwards, Executive Director at the Waterside School in Stamford. St. Luke’s welcomes some amazing students from Waterside. Duncan ran into the parent of one such (future) student:

“Hardly a day goes by when I’m not reminded of the goodness of Luke’s…In the latest example, I was having dinner, and was talking w/a waiter, a friend actually, and he mentioned how his daughter had found great opportunity at REACH Prep.  When I asked where she was now heading, he teared up and told me Luke’s and then went on at length about the place, its spirit, you and all that this opportunity means to his daughter, to his family. It was very emotional, very touching, very inspiring. Reminded me that too often, in our world of perfect, a “dream come true” is just the casual description of another get off of our long, long list of wants.  In this case, it was as the phrase describes – a dream, one bold, generous, impossible but one imagined, hoped for and worked for actually coming true. St. Luke’s made this dream come true. “

Duncan expresses the best purpose and the most meaningful reward for what we, as a community, do together. I was overcome by his words and my week of blessings.
